First up is Houseboating in the PNW: Lake Roosevelt in WA, and Lake Billy Chinook in OR. Both of these locations would make a fantastic backdrop to your next vacation.

Lake Roosevelt, WA

Where Is It: Lake Roosevelt is a 130 mile stretch of the Columbia River, just an hour's drive northwest of Spokane, WA. Seven Bays Marina is located near Davenport, and Kettle Falls Marina is further north near Colville. -- SEE MAP --

Why You Should Visit: Fairly undiscovered shoreline, it's easy to find solitude in one of the hundreds of coves or sandy beaches. With diverse terrain, the northern end of the lake is more densely forested shoreline, where the south has more cliffs. The whole lake is great for recreation, fishing, beachcombing, and wildlife viewing.

Best Time to Go: Houseboating season is from late May/June through September. -- SEE WEATHER --

Good to Know: Houseboats moor to the shoreline; you'll drive stakes into the ground and tie the houseboat lines to them to secure it.

Lake Billy Chinook, OR

Where Is It: Lake Billy Chinook was formed by the Round Butte Dam, at the confluence of the Crooked, Deschutes, and Metolius Rivers near Culver, OR about a 45 minute drive north of Bend, and 3 hours south of Portland. -- SEE MAP --

Why You Should Visit: Take in the dramatic towering volcanic basalt cliffs surrounding the crystal blue water. Check out rock formations like Balancing Rock near Lake Billy Chinook, or the impressive Billy Chinook Falls just two miles south of Cove Palisades Marina.

Must See/Do: Lake Billy Chinook is known for record Bull Trout fishing, but there is also Smallmouth, Rainbow, German Browns, and Kokanee Salmon. Crawdads/Crayfish can be caught in the Crooked and Deschutes Rivers.

Good to Know: Houseboats are required to moor to buoys along the lake; they cannot be moored to the shoreline.

  • Cove houseboat rents for 3 or 6 nights
  • Palisades houseboat has a 6 night minimum
